Senior Researcher Julian Wood

Julian’s three paper series started with Growing Beyond Growth, a discussion paper that analysed the demographic and economic challenges facing New Zealand’s regions, and opened up a conversation with other experts and policymakers from around the country about the parameters needed for sound regional development policy. The second paper in the series, Taking the Right Risks, offered policy recommendations based on these conversations and agreed that while risky, spending to help regions could be done well. The third paper in the series, A Risk Worth Taking, analysed the first year of the Provincial Growth Fund’s operation, pointing out its weaknesses and offering insight into how the spending could be better targeted for lasting success in New Zealand’s regions.
