THE LECTURE

Every parent, teacher, principal, policy expert, and education leader wants an education system that sees every child trained, inspired, and properly equipped for future success. Yet, despite the best intentions from all involved, far too many students are falling behind, with little hope of catching up.

It is easy to have an opinion about what works in the classroom. All of us have gone through the education system, and many will know what it is like to be concerned about our child’s schooling. It is a challenge to get beyond our personal experience of what worked and what didn’t, and trust that solutions can be found that will work across the whole system.

There is a lot of robust evidence about what improves student outcomes. So why isn’t it more common to see politicians, parents, teachers, union leaders, academics, and other decision-makers uniting around schooling solutions? What kind of environment would allow leaders to better engage with the evidence and make better choices for the students of today and tomorrow?

Professor John Hattie is an expert in education research with a sizeable portion of the evidence in this field to his name. Professor Hattie has advised governments and educationalists around the world on what works best to improve student outcomes, and brings his vast experience to our discussion about how educators can be empowered to make a greater difference to our children’s learning.

 

THE LECTURER

PROFESSOR JOHN HATTIE An internationally acclaimed academic, Professor John Hattie is one of the most influential voices in education research and practice, regularly advising educators and policymakers around the world. Currently the Director of Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Hattie was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education in 2011.

Professor Hattie’s major work, Visible Learning: A Synthesis of Over 800 Meta-Analyses Relating to Achievement was first published in 2008, and has since been updated to include over 1200 meta-analyses. He has also authored or co- authored 16 other books, and over 500 academic papers. With a PhD from the University of Toronto, and former positions as Professor and Chair of Educational Research Methodology at the University of North Carolina, Professor John Hattie’s international reputation and expertise is well earned, allowing him to speak about what works in education with clarity and authority.

Sir John Graham

Since 2008, the annual Sir John Graham has provided a unique opportunity to hear leading experts contribute to public debate in New Zealand.

Sir John Graham was an exemplary New Zealander who throughout his life displayed the consistency of character and care for others we hope for in the best of our leaders. Along with his well-known leadership roles as Captain of the All Blacks, Headmaster of Auckland Grammar, and Chancellor of the University of Auckland, Sir John inspired and led many organisations, including Maxim Institute.

Appropriately, he was recognised with a CBE in 1994 for his services to education and the community, and was further honoured when he was knighted in 2011. As a Founding Trustee of Maxim, Sir John Graham’s deep love for New Zealand, his passion for education, and concern for those on the margins of life remain at the heart of our work, and we are honoured to be able to hold this annual lecture in his name.
