Nominations have opened across the country for local government, with positions available on local Councils, Community Boards, Regional Councils, and District Health Boards. These elections only take place once every three years, and are a great opportunity to get involved and make a positive change in the community.+ more

Coping with the polling booth

Youth Parliament convened last week, giving 121 young people the opportunity to take over the role of our politicians, working together on select committees, asking questions to Ministers, and debating topical issues, such as the NCEA, and climate change. In the process the young people learnt much about how our government and lawmaking procedures work.+ more

Submission to the Prostitution Law Review Committee

Maxim Institute believes that all forms of prostitution are harmful to all who are engaged in them and that street and underage prostitution pose particular risks. We submitted that the Act should be amended to provide a way out of the industry for those engaged in street and underage prostitution and to criminalise purchasers. + more

The deal struck between Labour and National on the "anti-smacking Bill" has been hailed as statesmanlike (chiefly by the party leaders concerned), a sell-out, a piece of political genius, a victory for Key, a victory for Clark, and a sign of a new political consensus.
