Invalids and Sickness Benefits: The United Kingdom's recent reforms

A Welfare Working Group has been established to look into the welfare system. Welfare reform has been conducted in many countries around the world over the past couple of decades. The experiences of other countries can be of benefit to New Zealand and we look to make out welfare system the best it can be. Maxim Institute presented a research note which examined the UK's experience of reforming the sickness and invalids benefit, at a recent conference in Wellington.

In Christchurch on 18 May, Ryan Messmore delivered a guest lecture in which he unpacked a framework for understanding and engaging poverty, social breakdown and injustice. A framework that strengthens the case for civil society and limited government.

A heart and mind for the poor

New Zealand is a wealthy country in a world with much need. Confronted by this, many are concerned about the reality of severe poverty yet confused about what will make a difference in the lives of those who suffer. "A Heart and Mind for the Poor" looks at the history of the modern aid regime and the ways that it has developed over time. It also explores some of the competing philosophies about how to alleviate poverty and/or bring about sustainable development in poor countries, concluding with seven principles that should guide aid and assistance efforts.

Money from Helicopters?
This Issues Paper seeks to stimulate reasoned debate about New Zealand's contribution to global efforts to foster development and alleviate the effects of poverty in the developing world. It is part of a larger project with the ultimate goal of identifying the best possible foreign aid policies for New Zealand, based on a thorough understanding of the subject.

Review of the Maxim Institute Forum 2007

On Friday 30 March, leaders from around the country gathered at the Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE®, for Pursuing Social Justice in New Zealand. Delegates were informed and challenged by a top line-up of speakers and an MP Panel Discussion and were inspired by real life stories of social action.
