What is Maxim Institute?

Maxim Institute is an independent research and public policy think tank, based in Auckland, New Zealand. The Institute was formed in 2001 and is registered as a charitable trust.

What is Maxim Institute's mission?

At Maxim Institute, our mission is to foster the ideas and leadership that enable justice, freedom and compassion to flourish in New Zealand.

What does Maxim Institute do?

Maxim Institute provides decision-makers with sound policy advice, conducting research and analysis in key areas and making submissions on proposed legislation. We help inform New Zealanders with insightful commentary on contemporary issues by publishing thought-provoking commentary and contributing to the public debate in the mainstream media. A major focus of Maxim Institute's work is our internship programmes for tomorrow's leaders. We also provide New Zealanders with information, resources and motivation to become more informed and active participants in the democratic process.

What is a think tank?

Think tanks are a relatively new phenomenon in New Zealand, yet their influence is growing locally and worldwide. As ‘intellectual entrepreneurs', think tanks are free to explore new ideas and policy initiatives unconstrained by the pressures political parties face to be popular at the polls. And unlike lobby groups, who often represent only the narrow interests of their members, think tanks advance policies for the good of the whole country. For these reasons, think tanks enrich public debate and strengthen democracy.

What issues does Maxim Institute address?

At Maxim Institute, we are interested in what will make New Zealand a more just, free and compassionate place to live. To that end, we address issues such as: freedom and excellence in education; justice; democracy and citizenship; the proper role of government; marriage and family; rights and freedoms; wealth creation; the effective delivery of welfare; and genuine expressions of compassion.

Who does Maxim Institute represent?

Maxim Institute does not seek to represent the interests of any particular group of people, but rather ideas and policy solutions which will enable freedom, justice and compassion to flourish in New Zealand. Maxim Institute is not affiliated with any lobby group, religious organisation or political party.
